Excerpt

A creaking sound took over the sea and I looked around frantically, trying to find the source. I needed to get further below the surface. I'd only just turned eighteen today and it was too soon for me to be this near the surface. No mermaid came this close until the day after their birthday. Not that I had any idea why. I just didn't want to make my Dad angry by staying here for too long.
I turned to start swimming back home and deep enough that it could be called safety.
Something fell past me and I flicked my tail, sending myself back through the water and away from the perceived danger.
A moment later, things came into focus. A large piece of wood falling past me. I glanced back at the surface but wasn't able to make out what was going on through the bubbles churning through the waters. It was almost as if there was a struggle going on. Men versus the ocean. I knew which one would win. The same as always.
A scream reached my ears, surprisingly clear despite the water. I had to admit my hearing was better than a human's, but that didn't mean it was easy to hear through so much space.
Without thinking, I changed directions and headed back to the surface only to be pushed back by Shelbie's cold nose on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry, I can't stop," I told her. "Now isn't play time."
She shook her head, the dark beady eyes somehow telling me what I already knew, the surface was too dangerous for me. And yet, even now I wanted to help. Something was encouraging me, wanting me to reach out and touch the shipwreck happening in front of my eyes. It must be one of the tourist boats I'd seen from a distance. Most of the newer ones were a lot sturdier and made of metal. The biggest threat to them was barnacles.
Which meant there were probably children on board. "I need to check everyone is okay," I told Shelbie.
The seal sighed. Or at least, she did the closest thing to sighing I could imagine a seal doing. It was hard to tell what she was thinking or feeling a lot of the time. But now, she'd let me go. More than that, she'd swim by my side too. I knew Shelbie well enough to know she'd never abandon me. We'd been inseparable since we were born.
The water grew lighter as I approached the surface, the sun warming it in a way we didn't experience down at the bottom. Though we also didn't need it, we'd evolved to be well insulated against the cold sea.
Water cascaded down my face as I broke the surface, leaving my long hair lying in clumps around me. One of the disadvantages of living underwater was that my hair never got to look good. I'd seen plenty of pictures of humans that made me jealous of that.
I looked over at the shipwreck, noticing a lifeboat full of humans already heading for the shore. I sighed in relief, that was something at least. I didn't want anyone to get hurt, especially not children. "It looks like they're all safe," I said to Shelbie as she popped above the waves with me.
She squeaked and pointed her head in another direction. I followed her gaze, trying to find what she was looking at and hoping it wasn't anything serious.
"Oh no." I dived back under the water and headed towards the man floating on debris. He needed help and everyone else already seemed to be gone. I was his only chance and there was no escaping that.
I powered through the ocean, my tail was good for that. Checking on my progress, my head broke above the waves to check where he was. Straight ahead. A few more swishes of my tail should do it.
I reached the piece of driftwood he was clinging to and steeled my courage. Now I was here, I wasn't too sure about the whole saving-someone thing. If I dared to admit it, I was almost nervous. What if I was too late? Or what if I wasn't and he didn't want help? It was a strange position to be in, knowing someone was between life and death.
"Hi." I leaned on the driftwood too, hoping I didn't startle him too much and send him falling back into the water to drown. That would be counterproductive to my plan.
"Hey." He coughed, water falling from his mouth.
"Oh no, are you okay?" I had no idea what to do with a human near the brink of death. It was pretty frowned upon in mermaid society to even help a human.
"I've been better. Were you on the boat? I don't recognise you?" His voice sounded smooth, almost like he hadn't just had a lungful of water. I pushed that thought away. I still needed to save him. It didn't matter if he was a good man or a bad one. I had a duty of care to him.
"No, I wasn't on the boat. They've left already," I responded.
"Oh." He glanced away and my heart went out for him. It couldn't be nice to have been left behind like that.
"But I can help you."
"You can?" His eyes lit up, giving his face a more youthful edge than previously. It was interesting, I'd judged him as five or six years older than me but now I wasn't so sure.
"Yes, but I need you to promise never to tell anyone how."
He nodded. "Anything, if you can help me."
"I can. I'm going to swim around to your side and then I need you to grab hold of me and not let go."
He nodded again.
Letting go of the driftwood, I dived back below the water and swam underneath, eager to get to the other side and help him.
The man flinched slightly when I popped back up but that didn't stop him from putting his arms around me. Certain he wasn't going to fall off, I set off for a hidden cove I'd heard about from my sister. I'd never visited before. I'd never even been above the surface this close to the city before, but I knew where it was and that it was hidden from view. There wasn't any safer place to leave an abandoned human and hope he managed to find his way back.
He didn't say a word as we swam. I didn't blame him. Even if he hadn't worked out what I was yet, the whole situation was a little bit messed up. He'd been abandoned by his own kind and saved by a woman he didn't know and had never seen before. A beautiful one at that. I wasn't going to deny how I looked. It was impossible to when my entire race was created to be beautiful and alluring for no apparent reason. The old tales suggested we used to trap humans with our charms, but I found that unlikely. We weren't a violent race.
The man grew heavier as we approached the shore, his weight threatening to drag me down. That wouldn't be a problem for me, but I suspected things would go very wrong if he spent too long beneath the surface. A weight lifted and I smiled to myself, realising Shelbie must be giving me a helping hand. Or head more like. I didn't look down, it would be too dangerous too, but I'd make sure I thanked her properly later.
With the shore just feet away, I flicked my tail a little harder, moving the two of us through the water with ease. I'd been careful up until now, not wanting to wear myself out before he was in sight of safety. But even as weak as he was, he should be able to make it to the shore without me if he needed to.
My free hand landed on the soft stone and I sighed with relief. We'd made it. He was safe. I hoisted him out of the water, grateful when he grabbed hold of one of the boulders and pulled himself up. The man got to his feet a little shakily. He held out his hand and I shook my head.
"I can't come with you," I whispered, unsure how much I wanted to admit to him. I might have just saved his life but I wasn't an idiot. I didn't know how much the people on land knew about mermaids, and on the off chance it wasn't much, I didn't want to get caught.
"Why not?"
"The sea is my home," I replied.
"That's not possible."
Realising there wasn't any other way to convince him, I did the only thing I could think of and flicked my tail above the waves.
He gasped. "You're a mermaid."
"Yes." The moment the whispered word left my lips a sharp pain engulfed me. It ripped through my tail and up to where my heart was. Black spots swam across my eyes, blinding me from what was going on. All I knew was pain. I clutched at my chest, trying to stop whatever was happening. Something warm slipped through my fingers just as everything went black.

The Excerpt

The first day of autumn was ruined by a heavy man with a moustache that looked somewhat like a dead mouse.
“I want to exchange this wand!” he bellowed, waving one of my finest wands in front of my nose. His grubby hand was coiled so tight around it, I was surprised he hadn’t snapped it yet.
I took a deep breath to calm myself and used my best customer service voice. “Due to the personal nature of wands, I can’t take allow an exchange. We discussed this upon purchase and you can see it here on your ticket. I’m sorry.”
“Nonsense! My son barely used it.” He slammed the wand down on my counter, rattling the jars with gems and crystals. “Just give me my money back, witch.”
“Sir, there’s no need to raise your voice.”
“Just gave me my money back!” His moustache quivered with every word and his face was slowly turning a suspiciously red shade of red.
I blinked slowly. “As you can see on your receipt, there are no refunds after fourteen days.”
“Rubbish! I want to speak to the manager!” He slammed his fist down on the counter and his spittle flew all in my face.
“Sir, there’s no manager in this place. I’m the owner of Amethyst’s Wand Shop.”
“Aha! So you admit you’re responsible for these terrible wands then?”
“No, I just said this is my store.” Despite my best efforts, I could feel myself become agitated. It wasn’t every day I was accused of making a bad wand, let alone being threatened and intimidated in my own shop.
While I sympathised with his cause and wished that the wand better suited his son, I remembered recommending he brought his kid in before purchasing an item from my collection. It was always better that way and lead to less incompatible matches. If he had listened to me, we wouldn’t be here.
His moustache danced on his lip. “Listen to me, give me my money back or I’ll report you to the CWC.”
The Centre of Wand Control? How dared he.
I grabbed a couple of bills from the register and slapped it on the counter. “Fine. Here’s your refund. Now, leave the wand and get the hell out of my shop!”
My sudden outburst seemed to startle the man. “W-What?”
“That’s what you wanted, right?” I grabbed the broom from the corner and swept the ground in front of his feet. Most people assumed witches used these things for flying, but I found them to be excellent for cleaning and chasing rude customers out of my shop. “Out! Out!”
“Jeez, what’s wrong with you, lady!” The man hurried to the exit, his hand clenched tightly around the money he so desired.
“Haven’t you heard?” I called after him, startling some innocent passersby. “I’m crazy!”
With that sorted, I slammed the glass door shut and flicked the OPEN sign to CLOSED. That was enough peopling for today, especially if they were going to ruin my favourite day of the year.
I knew I shouldn’t have opened the store today. Instead, I should’ve gone for a walk in the park, admired the first orange leaves, and drank hot tea while making my grandmother’s famous pumpkin soup.
I could still do that.
“I’ll just be upstairs, Herbert,” I said, patting the stone cat next to the till. “Behave, alright?”
The cat didn’t react, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t understood. He gave me his usual look and I nodded.
“You’re right, I did forget to close the door. What did I do with my keys?”
Before I could shut the shop, the little bell rang, and I looked up to see a well-dressed man striding towards me. A gust of wind sent his scent towards me. I frowned. What was a mage doing in my wand shop? They didn't believe in the same system of magic we used.
“I’m closed,” I said, gesturing to the sign on the door. “Closed.”
“Oh really? Didn’t see the sign.”
"I, but… Fine… What can I help you with?" I asked, trying to treat him just like I would any other customer, and finding that I failed. I planned to blame it on the stunned feeling that was taking up most of my attention right now.
"Are you Amethyst from the Gemstone Coven?" he asked gruffly. Not a dislikable voice, but not the best one either. It struck me as the kind of voice that would grow on someone.
"Yes. But you know that already," I pointed out. He'd just walked into my wand shop, and I was the only person here. "But I prefer Amy."
"Fine. I'm Detective Ambrose, Paranormal Police Department."
I raised an eyebrow. "So?"
"I need your help."
"Finding a wand?"
Annoyance flitted through his eyes and a tick started on his jaw. Oops. It might not have been my best move to go straight for the elephant in the room.
"I find my staff is far more effective."
"I'm sure it is." I let a wry smile spread over my lips, but he didn't respond. Great. I'd gotten one of those mages who didn't appreciate comments about his staff. "What can I do for you, Detective?"
Despite knowing I hadn't done anything wrong, a flutter of guilt settled in my stomach. At this rate, I was going to end up confessing to a murder I'd never even dreamed of.
"I said. I need your help."
I sighed dramatically. "Just saying you need my help isn't going to get the clean, concise kind of answer you're looking for," I pointed out. "Why don't we start with a subject? I'll guess, you can tell me if I'm right."
Ambrose growled. Huh, the books were right, that sound was kind of sexy on a man.
"I'd say the whereabouts of my sister, but Topaz lives to her own rules, I haven't seen her in months," I mused, tapping a pen against my chin. "Now wandcraft, that'd be my real area of expertise."
He tensed.
Bingo. That was just what he wanted me for. The real question was why.
“So… Detective Ambrose from the Paranormal Police Department. What could a mage like you possibly want from a wandmaker like me?”
“Help with a case. There are life’s at stake.”
“What case?”
“It’s classified. I can’t tell you until you agree to consult.”
The same annoyance bubbled up in me. “Riiiight… So you want my help, but you can’t tell me what it is until I agree to help you.”
He nodded. “Correct. I’ll need you to sign a waiver and a non-disclosure agreement before I can tell you more.”
“Of course…”
While the PPD was run by all types of paranormals, my family and coven preferred to stay clear of law enforcement. It was best not to get mixed up with them, even if it was to help…
It did sound exciting. Consulting with the police, maybe catching murders and thieves, a whole new adventure away from sculpting wands for snooty customers.
I turned to the cat, seeking his opinion. “What do you think, Herb?”
“Are you... talking to a statue?” Detective Ambrose asked, sounding bemused.
“Herbert helps me think.”
“It’s a stone cat…” he said slowly.
“Wow, that’s rude of you.” I cupped Herbert’s ears. “Don’t listen to the mean man.”
“You’re crazy.” Ambrose frowned until his two eyebrows met in the middle of his face. “Are you serious?”
“I wasn’t talking to you,” I deflected, turning my back to him so I could consult with Herbert alone. “What do you think? Should I do this?”
The stone cat shot me a disapproving look that reminded me of my grandmother, but then again, what did he know? He never left the shop.
Besides, this consulting thing sounded fun and with the season change, there was always room for new and exciting adventures.
I ignored the cat’s advice and turned back to face the detective. “I’ll do it, but on one condition.”
“You’ll find you’re in no position to make conditions, Miss Amethyst.”
“Tut.” I held up a finger to silence him. “I’ll help you, after you apologise to Herbert.”
Detective Ambrose’s face fell. “You… You want me to apologise to your statue?

Chapter 1

Grimm Academy. Otherwise known as the last place I want to be. Something my parents are well aware of. But that doesn't matter to them, not when their main focus is allegedly keeping me safe.
From where I'm standing, destroying all the spinning wheels and then letting me get on with my life seems like an easier thing to do. But what do I know? I'm just a lowly princess who does what she's told. One day, maybe I'll marry a prince, and then we can inherit father's throne together.
I grimace at the very idea of that. I don't want to play second fiddle to anyone. Especially not some prince who probably had no chance at ruling without me.
Which led to this. I didn't want to come to the academy, and yet, here I am. All because I want to be queen in my own right someday. Father promised that if I came here without a fuss, he would consider changing the law for me and calling me his heir.
I hope he sticks to that promise. While I don't want to be here on principle, they have an excellent record of diplomacy lessons, along with other things that could help a future ruler. I may be here under protest, but that doesn't mean I don't want to make the most of it.
I cough loudly to gain the attention of the receptionist. She doesn't seem to think it's worth paying attention.
"Good morning, dear, what can I do for you?" she asks, a bored sounding tone in her voice.
I want to correct her that I'm a your highness, not a dear, but I don't think it's a good idea. I'm not the only princess here. Pulling rank isn't likely to go down very well.
"I'm new here," I say instead.
She nods. "Not surprising, we seem to have had an influx of new students recently." She leans forward and cups her hand to the side of her mouth. "Lot's of people turning eighteen, I think."
A weak smile twists at my lips. That's me too. Eighteen and now having to come face to face with the reality of having a prophecy hanging over my head. Even if I don't personally believe in it, that doesn't mean others don't.
"What's your name?" she asks, looking over her glasses and looking me up and down as if it will reveal my name.
"Princess Briar," I respond, suddenly self-conscious about my title, as if I don't deserve it here.
"I'm sure you've read academy policy about titles?" she asks, scribbling a note on my file.
I bite my lip and nod. Maybe this is why I'm feeling so on edge. "I am."
"Alright then, Briar..."
I flinch. Only my parents ever call me by my given name alone, it's odd to have it coming from someone else.
"...Your room is on the third floor. This is your key. Your schedule, map, and welcome packet are all on the desk in there. Do you have any luggage with you?"
"Yes." I point over to the two neatly packed suitcases waiting by the door.
"Excellent. Can you manage them, or do you need someone to help?"
My mouth falls open. I have to lug them with me up three flights of stairs? As much as I don't want to, I also don't want to draw the wrong kind of attention to me by saying no.
"I'll manage."
"Good. There's an elevator at the end of the hall."
"Thank you." I wait for a moment, trying to work out if she has any more of an explanation about what I'm supposed to do here.
"Welcome to Grimm Academy." She grins, and I take that as my sign to leave.
I grab my cases, adjusting to the weight of them easier than I think I will. I glance over at the woman behind the desk, but she's not watching me any longer, having turned back to whatever task she'd been doing before I interrupted.
Let's just hope I got her instructions right.
I head over to the hallway to the left, the one that should have an elevator at the bottom. Sure enough, there it is. I press the button and wait, squeezing myself inside as soon as the doors open.
The ride feels like it takes no time at all, and an age. I have no idea if I'm going to be sharing a room or not, or what it's going to be like once I'm in there. For the first time, I regret not reading any of the information my parents gave me about Grimm. If I had, then maybe I'd be prepared for this.
I juggle my belongings down the corridor until I find a door with my name on it. Huh, I guess I'm not sharing then. That's good news at least. I'm used to having my own space, and I'm not keen to give up on that quite yet.
I slot the old fashioned key into the lock and wait until I hear a click.  I quite like the feel of the heavy metal in my hand. It reminds me I'm in a castle.
The door opens into a medium-sized room. There's more space than I expect, with a double bed, and large comfortable looking desk. Plus, a small bathroom. I'm glad I don't have to share that, either.
I put my suitcases down. I know I have to unpack, but that can wait. My parents taught me the best way to look after all my clothes when I was younger. Well, not them exactly. But they made sure I spent time with various members of the staff in order for me to learn necessary life skills. I've always been grateful to them for doing that.
I flop back into the chair and move myself closer to the desk, examining the information in front of me. Most of it is what I expect. No passing notes in class, a certain level of dress is expected, show respect for my other students. None of it is anything less than I expected.
"Now what?" I ask myself, searching through everything in the hope of finding the promised timetable.
I pull it out and study it. Nothing unexpected there, either. Diplomacy, dancing, politics...dry, boring, and things I've been doing since I was old enough to walk. It doesn't mean there's not going to be anything interesting in the classes, but the thought of going to them doesn't excite me much.
I check the time. Alchemy starts in fifteen minutes. That one sounds interesting enough that I should go, even if I'm not expected to on my first day.
Rising to my feet, I dust off the skirt of my dress. If I want to go, then I don't have time to change. I think I look okay, though. Certainly enough for going to a class with lots of other people in my exact situation in.
At least, I hope so.
I check my bag to make sure I have all the paper, pens and everything else that I need. Maybe there's something else I require for Alchemy, but I hope not. My parents whisked me off here the moment I said yes, I haven't had time to do any shopping or preparing.
I stand up straight. I'm Briar, Princess and heir to my father's throne. I'm not going to let myself chicken out of going to class. With that, I head for the door, ready to face whatever Grimm Academy throws at me.

5 Reasons Black Cats Are Awesome by Lucy Corentine (The Vampire Detective)

October is Black Cat Appreciation Month (at least, according to some sources it is. Some others seem to think that it should be August, but that's well and truly gone, so we're running with October!)

To celebrate all things Black Cat, Arizona Tape and I decided to ask our only character who owns a black cat (well, only joint character, technically Mona owns a black cat too) what her top ten reasons why black cats are awesome are. You can find five of them here, and five of them on Arizona's Website.

Black cats are the least likely to be adopted from shelters, and I've seen this first hand. My best friend (who I've known since we were eleven) has a black cat named Jack, who she adopted because no one else would. And he is an absolute sweetheart. He loves cuddles, and will climb inside her jumpers (and once climbed all over my face while I was sleeping).

Luckily for me, black cats are lucky here in the UK, and I can certainly say that Jack was!

But now...the reasons:

A Bit About Lucy Corentine

Lucy is the main character of The Vampire Detective Series, co-written with Arizona. It's part of our Twin Souls Universe with a focus on the vampire side of society. Lucy is quirky and intelligent, not to mention a bit of a detective, and she's determined to solve a mystery (I can't tell you what the mystery is though...spoilers!) Oh, and in case you didn't guess, she owns a black cat, his name is Jester, and he's a real mischief maker!

What The Fangs Laura Greenwood Arizona Tape paranormal mystery reverse harem The Vampire Detective

When she started her investigation, the last thing Lucy expected was to end up with an illegal slave in her kitchen, and a stirring hunger for blood. And that doesn't even take into account the childhood-friend-turned-rival PI, the stubborn fiancĂ©, or the eccentric inventor she has to deal with.

With the mystery deepening with each new discovery, Lucy uncovers a vampire underworld she never knew existed. All she has to do is decide whether she wants to be a part of it, or if she should help take it down.

Excerpt

One look at my schedule and I know I made the right choice coming here. Not that I got to choose. My fate won me a place, and my parents pushed me towards it. I can be bitter about it if I want to be, but I prefer to take this for what it is, an opportunity to become what I've always wanted to be.
A Huntsman.
Leaves crunch under my feet as I make my way down the path which leads to the Huntsmen's training ground. Excitement bubbles up within me, teemed with nerves as I try and prepare myself for the refusal I'm probably going to get. They don't let women in very often. There have been three, ever. I've studied everything about them in the hopes that I can add my name to that list.
Shouts fill the air, along with the thud of arrows hitting their targets and the stench of horses. I breathe it all in. I'm going to make this my life at Grimm Academy. I don't want dancing lessons and learning how to sew like the other girls here. It just doesn't fit with my personality.
"Are you lost?"
I look up to find a man leaning against the nearest tree, his arms crossed and an air of arrogance around him. I can take him down a notch or two given the chance.
"I want to see the head Huntsman," I say firmly, staring straight at the man and not giving in.
"You're a woman."
"I noticed. I still want to see him," I insist.
"Have you got a message? I can take it?" He pushes away from the tree and walks towards me.
"No."
"Then what are you doing here?"
"That's none of your business," I insist. "Are you going to take me to where I need to be?" I raise an eyebrow, refusing to let my discomfort show. I'm not going to let him get the upper hand just because I'm a woman.
"Sure. But only so I can see you get ripped to shreds," he admits.
I chuckle. "Trust me, that's not going to happen."
"Ah. You want to be a Huntsman then." He gives me a knowing smirk that I choose to ignore.
"I don't want to be a Huntsman, I'm going to be one," I stress.
"You've got the cockiness of one, that's for sure."
"It's just confidence," I counter. "I know what I'm good at, and I'll make sure that everyone else does too," I point out. "Which way?"
"I'll take you. That way, you won't be bothered by anyone else thinking you're lost."
"If I'm not mistaken, I'd think you were warming up to me," I quip.
"Maybe I am. I might be in need of a partner with the ability to actually get stuff done."
"What happened to your last one?" As little as I want to admit it, walking and talking to him is actually helping, and I'm quite enjoying his company. Though I'm not in any hurry to admit it to him.
"He had an unfortunate hunting accident." There's a flippant note in his voice that I'm not entirely sure is fitting with what he's saying.
"Are you trying to say you had him killed?" I ask. "That's not a good way to approach finding a new partner."
He chuckles. "No, he really did have a hunting accident. He fell off his horse and broke a leg."
"Pity." And shows just how easy a time of it I'll have. I won't be doing any falling off horses in my time here.
"Do you have a name?"
"Doesn't everyone?" I throw back.
"Clearly you've never talked to Rumplestiltskin," he mutters.
A half-smile spreads over my face. "That's true. I've heard he can be a tricksy one."
"That's one way of putting it. That man is always up to no good." He stares off into the distance, almost as if he's remembering something. I wonder if Rumplestiltskin is supposed to be part of his fate. It's always a miller's girl in the tales I've heard, but that doesn't mean anything. The academy would be very empty if only the most common fate is the only one that can happen.
"Any tips you can give me for meeting the head Huntsman?" I ask, partly to change the subject, and partly because I can do with tips. While everyone knows about the Huntsmen and what they do, there's no real information on how to become one, or what it's like. I'm walking in blind knowing nothing more than that this is what I want.
"Oh no, that's not how it works if you want to be one of us." Amusement shines through every word.
"It was worth a try." I shrug. This isn't going to set me back at all. I'm still going to get what I want, even if that's mostly because I'm just determined to make it happen that way.
"I suppose it is. He'll certainly like your tenacity." He thinks for a moment. "Just don't backchat him too much, and you'll be fine."
"What makes you think I'll even try do that?" I ask, turning slightly so I can flutter my eyelashes at him.
He chuckles. "Don't do that, either. He'll hate it."
"And you?"
"I don't mind, but only because I know you're doing it to get what you want, and not to try and get me to ask you to prom."
I scoff. "As if I'd do that."
"Not the prom kind of girl?"
"Would I be coming to the Huntsmen if I was?" That's an obvious question on his part, and I don't like giving obvious answers.
"I'll give you that one. We're here, by the way." He gestures to a hut with a big oak door. "You still haven't told me your name."
"You're right, I haven't."
"Are you going to?" He waits patiently, clearly expecting an answer.
"Aredenne."
"That's a mouthful." He looks at me just like everyone does when they hear my name for the first time. They expect one of those preppy princesses that are up in the castle primping and preening, obsessed with their looks.
"That's why everyone calls me Red." I don't wait for him to respond and knock on the door, putting all my energy into it.
The door swings open seconds later, and I know I'm in the right place.
