I followed Ma'at into a small room, with Menefer trailing behind me. He didn't need to say anything for me to know how worried he was about this part of my journey.
Not that I blamed him. Today was going to be the day I died. There wasn't a real way for me to prepare for that. Not when I had no idea what I was supposed to expect.
"When you're ready, there's poisoned wine for you to drink," Ma'at said, gesturing to the goblet sitting on the only table in the room.
"Will it hurt?" My voice cracked, revealing the worry I was feeling about my impending demise.
Ma'at shook her head. "It will put you into a peaceful sleep, you shouldn't feel a thing. After that, your guess is as good as mine about what happens, but you should be able to find your way to the Hall of Judgement on your own."
"Thank you."
"I'll leave you to say your goodbyes. It's a pleasure as always, Menefer, please give my regards to your master."
I raised an eyebrow. Surely she realised that we were both well aware of her relationship with Maahes. Neither of them had ever been particularly good at keeping it quiet.
"Good luck, Edrice. I'll see you in the Hall."
"Thank you," I whispered.
My gaze drifted back to the goblet. Was I really going to do this? It was one thing to contemplate it while it was just an abstract plan, quite another to be faced with the thing that would end my life as I knew it.
