One of my favourite parts of working on this series is the progressing friendship between Ani and Nik and the way they bounce off each other well - it actually is nothing like what I planned for them when I started my plot, but it fits them so well! Read on for an excerpt!

Well, the pile of linen. I don't think it can really be called a body at this point.
"We'll think of something," I promise.
"Maybe there's some sort of clue around about..."
"You better not be thinking about investigating this yourself," I cut him off. "You can't get into more trouble."
He sighs. "Why do you have to talk so much sense?"
"It's a gift. And one that's going to keep you out of trouble."
"Then I will make it easy for you and promise that I won't do anything until you're back from your date with Ramesses."
I let out a small groan.
Nik raises his eyebrow. "Are you not looking forward to it?"
"I'm just tired and know it's going to be an exhausting evening of talking to people I don't know and trying to represent someone I don't know that much about."
"Do they ask you much about the temple?"
"To be honest, I'm not sure if many of them know who I am enough to do that."
"That's a shame."
"You say that, but it's probably best if I don't go around telling everyone about the ins and outs of burial preparation. It might not be the best topic for high-end banquets."
"You might be right there," he agrees. "Do you still want me to spend some time with Matia?"
"If you wouldn't mind. My room is open for you."
"Aren't you worried I'm going to go snooping?"
"Not really."
I don't miss the pleased expression which flits across his face, even if he covers it quickly.
"We should get out of here," I say. "I need to meet Ramesses."
"And here was me thinking that you wouldn't want to hang out in a mortuary after dark."
"I'm not five, I don't worry about people coming back to life at night."
"Is that something you used to worry about?" Nik asks, gesturing for me to pass through the door before him.
"Yes. I used to have a regular nightmare about it."
"Interesting. In mine, I was drowning in the Thames."
"Maybe the living dead chased you into it," I suggest.
He chuckles. "Now that would make a fun story."
"So long as I'm not the main character," I mutter.
"Oh, Ani, where's your sense of adventure?"
"You got it into trouble too many times and now it's on strike," I retort.
Nik chuckles. "That's fair."
