Excerpt: Apprentice Of The Dead (The Apprentice Of Anubis #1)

Image
Apprentice Of The Dead is set in an alternative (but modern) version of London where the Egyptian Empire never fell and Ani is an unusual female trainee priestess of Anubis. If you enjoy my academy books AND my Forgotten Gods books, then this series is going to be right up your alley (plus a derpy pet jackal...) *** Copyright 2021, Laura Greenwood. *** Nikare and I find our way to the far body, a woman with very pale skin and a bloodied nose. Maybe volunteer bodies is just a fancy way of saying criminals. But I doubt it. The official line of the Egyptian Empire is that a certain level of criminal forfeits the right to life after death and it's an insult to the gods to send them to the Weighing of the Heart knowing they would fail. More likely, these bodies belonged to those who were too poor to be able to afford even a partial mummification, but who didn't like the idea of going without completely. "Stand back, I've got this," Nikare instructs me. I cross my arms ...

Excerpt: Wake The Dead (The Necromancer Council #1)

In some ways, the Necromancer Council is one of the hardest series I've ever written. All of my heroines have a part of me in them (even if its something super small like a food item I like), but Cissy has more than most - and not the good stuff either. This series DOES come with a trigger warning for past abuse. I purposefully chose not to depict it on page (including in flashbacks and dreams) to avoid scenes that would upset readers or me, but Cissy has suffered a lot. If you're worried about the triggers in this series, please reach out with your hard limits and I'll advise you whether you should skip it or not. This is a story I had to tell as part of my own healing journey, but I completely understand that other people might not want to read it. However, I will add that NONE of the abuse or cruelty is committed by the love interest. Darius is sweet and supportive throughout the series. *** Copyright 2021 Laura Greenwood *** She took a deep breath. "Do you remember...

Nephthys and Heka's story has been sitting in my head for a long time...but not nearly as long as it's been in theirs! If you've read Bringer Of The River Waters , you may remember one of the characters commenting on them....well now they're finally meeting again after several thousand years. What could possibly go wrong? Read on for a teaser! *** Copyright 2022 Laura Greenwood *** My gaze landed on a familiar form striding into the clearing, causing my heart to skip a beat. "Heka?" There was no keeping the surprise out of my voice. The god of healing and magic was the last person I'd expected to find waiting for me in the oasis. Thousands of years ago, just after Seth had first shown his true colours, I'd thought that there could be something between Heka and me. But it was a foolish dream born out of misery. "Good evening, Nephthys," he responded with a dip of his head. "You haven't changed." I arched an eyebrow. "It'...

Who would you be more like? Victoria wants to have fun at the ball, but Denise would prefer reading. (I think I'd prefer reading, but the ball does also sound fun!) **** Copyright 2021 Laura Greenwood.  **** "Are you excited?" Denise asks. I smile and nod. "What about you?" She grimaces. "I'd rather spend my time reading a book by the fire." "Than going out to parties? I've heard they're rather extravagant." She snorts in a very unladylike fashion. I hope she doesn't do that around potential suitors. "I don't need to find a husband that way." "Then how are you planning on doing it?" I ask, genuine curiosity urging me on. "Maybe I'll simply have Papa arrange a marriage." She turns to her dressing table and opens up her reticule, slipping a small book into it. My eyes widen. Is she really going to take reading material to a ball? I know better than to ask. The answer is yes, and we both know...
