"And that's the reason you'll make a great leader. You understand it isn't as simple as just winning the trial." He raises his mug towards me. "To Queen Kayra."
A blush steals across my cheeks, but I have to admit I like the way it sounds. "And to one of her most trusted advisors," I respond.
"We both know I hope to be more than that to you." The words are almost inaudible, but not quite. I imagine he's done it on purpose. I think he wants me to respond, but also wants to give me an easy escape if I'm not ready to.
I set down my mug on the windowsill and turn to face him.
He seems to notice my seriousness and sets his aside as well.
I take a deep breath, trying to ignore the swirling nerves inside me. I'm not used to making announcements or decisions like this.
"I want that too," I say abruptly. "I've been thinking about it since we talked."
Something flashes over his face but I can't put a name to it.
"If you want to ask if you can kiss me again, then you can," I suggest.
Magnus chuckles. "You know you can ask me too, right?"
"All right then. Can I kiss you?" I'm surprised how easily the question slips from me. But maybe I shouldn't be. There's something about Magnus that makes me feel more at ease than I have with anyone else, possibly ever.
"You can."
I shuffle forward and lean in as he does the same, bringing us closer together. Maybe this is why I wanted him to sit on the bed with me.
My eyes flutter closed as we grow closer together, both of us taking the time to savour the moment. If this is our first kiss, then I want it to be special.
As soon as his lips brush against mine, I know I've made the right choice. He lifts a hand and threads it through my hair, pulling me closer so he can deepen the kiss.
I want to lose myself in him. More than that, I need to.
He breaks the kiss and pulls back, a confused expression on his face. "Do you hear that?"
Before I can respond, my bedroom door swings open and Demi rushes into the room.
"Did you get it?" she demands, only then slowing to see what she's walked in on. She raises an eyebrow at me, but doesn't say anything about how close the two of us are sitting. "Well?" She plonks herself down in my desk chair.
"Have I got what?" I ask, shuffling back to put some space between me and Magnus. Not that I really want to.
"The email about the third trial. There are messages going around saying it's gone out, but no one seems to know what the outcome is," she says.
"Oh." My heart pounds as I contemplate what that could mean. I'm surprised the results haven't been leaked yet, it doesn't seem in keeping with Serena's personality to keep them to herself.
Unless I won.
