"Do you want me to go pick up some dinner for the three of us?" he asked. "Then we can plan and eat."
A genuine smile spread over her face. "I'd like that."
"What should I get? I'll admit to not having any idea what an eight-year-old eats."
"You'll get used to that," she promised. "You should have seen me when she was a baby. I had no idea what I was doing or what I should be giving her."
"I wish I had," he whispered.
"I'm sorry you missed it," she responded just as quietly, only realising after the words had left her that she hadn't told him Fiona was actually his.
It seemed as if he'd worked it out despite that.
"Me too. But I know there's nothing either of us could have done to change that. We tried to find one another and we failed. If we'd gotten luckier, maybe I wouldn't have missed out."
Bex bit her bottom lip, trying to hold off the threat of tears as she considered what life had taken for them.
In front of her, Curtis hesitated, as if wanting to say something, but not managing to come up with it.
"Pizza," she said once she was sure she had her tears under control. "You can't go wrong with pizza for any age."
Curtis chuckled. "That's true. Any preference?"
"She likes ham and pineapple."
"Fiona has good taste," he observed.
It was her turn to laugh. "You absolute heathens."
"And what can I get for the non-heathen who is going to put up with us eating it?"
"Seafood, please."
He raised an eyebrow. "And you're saying we're the heathens..."
"I can have something else..."
"No, of course not. If you want seafood pizza, then that's what you shall have."
"Thank you. I think I have a twenty in my purse. One second..."
"No need. This is my treat," he said.
"Are you sure? It's going to cost more than for one."
"I know. I don't mind."
"Thanks. I'll go get Fiona and meet you back at mine?" Even saying the words made her heart skip a beat. She looked forward to the three of them sharing a meal together.
"That sounds good to me. I'll see you there and we can work out what to do with all of this," he promised.
"Thank you."
"Any time." The way he smiled made her long to reach out and kiss him.
The urge took her a little by surprise, even if it was something she'd been thinking about almost constantly since the day he'd walked back into her life. Which made sense. They were mates, the universe wanted them to be together.
