Excerpt:

Naveen’s heart ached as she stumbled out of the bar. The cool January air hit her lungs and she doubled over. Her skin tingled as knots grew in her belly, making her anxious. My mother is dead? No it can’t be! She covered her face as the last image of her mother filled her mind. When Naveen tried to stand, her head spun and Slone kept her up as she stared at the concrete under her feet.
We don’t have to become the guardian; we could just stay in the human realm, her beast suggested, but it left a sour taste in her mouth. Her mother’s death may have been abrupt, but giving up her role as protector wouldn’t bring her mom back.
“I can get you home, now.” Slone’s voice broke her focus on the sidewalk.
“How?” Her high-pitched voice had her wincing internally. She licked her lower lip, hating the ache coursing through her soul. She had a choice to give up and not be a guardian, but the rest of her family would disown her and the thought of disappointing her dead mother just made the pain stronger. If she gave up and refused to be a guardian, her pain would stay the same but her connections to her loved ones would shatter like glass. No, she needed to be strong and become a guardian to make her mother proud. I just wish I had more freaking time! A tear rolled down her face and her beast whimpered with her head down.
“I have a trick, but you can’t tell anyone about it.” He grabbed her hands and walked to the alleyway behind the bar. A bartender sauntered inside seconds later after tossing her cigarette to the ground.
“Why do you want to help me?” She met his gaze and he gently grabbed her hair. Green strands instead of her natural blonde covered his fingers. “Oh goodness, it really is true.” She swallowed hard. Her mother’s voice filtered into her mind: When the guardianship is passed down, your hair will turn green like mine.
