Excerpt: By Any Other Name

Would you like a tease from my latest project, By Any Other Name, a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. There are a few differences, for example the setting has been changed to Paris (I don't know Italy well enough to do it justice) and the characters names have been changed (partly because of the setting change, partly because I already had a character called Juliet in another WIP from before this one became a real thing!

By Any Other Name is available for preorder now!

She was even more beautiful now, almost like the sun; far too bright and dazzling for his enhanced sight. It was almost impossible for him to believe that she was a vampire too, even in their brief meeting she’d seemed so innocent. She looked as if she was about to speak, and he had to remind himself not to answer, for she wasn’t aware that he was there and the last thing that he wanted to do was scare her.
“Why me?” She looked up at the sky and Romain wished that her eyes were on him instead. “Why did you have to be Romain? Without your name, I could give myself to you. Though for love, I would happily give up my own.”
Romain’s breath caught in his throat and his heart skipped a beat. She’d clearly felt the same way that he had during their brief meeting; like there was something more between them, even if they were from opposing clans. He was unsure about whether or not to speak up when she spoke again and he strained his ears to catch each word.
“It’s only in name that we’re enemies. What is a Montague after all? For it isn’t any physical part of a man, and any other name would work,” she sighed loudly and moved across the balcony, her face now turned away from where Romain was hiding. “What’s in a name? For a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; as would he if he were called a different name.”

“For you, I’d go by any other name,” the words blurted out before he could stop them and Josie startled, turning to look in his direction. Knowing that staying hidden wasn’t in his best interests, Romain made the leap up to the balcony, landing smoothly in front of her.

While the world was led to believe that the French Nobility finally fell alongside the last Imperial Empire in the Nineteenth Century; there was a second court that survived. This court was filled with the creatures that no one wanted to believe truly existed; vampires.

Within the borders of Paris, there were two rival vampire clans; the Baronies of Montague and Capulet. For centuries, the two clans have been at war, using the various French Revolutions, and the wars since, as a cover for their own dark purposes.

The fight between the two clans was so ancient, that neither the Montague heir, nor the Capulet daughter, had any idea about what it was over, and the two star-crossed lovers began their own doomed romance…

NB: While names and the setting have been changed, and vampires have been introduced, By Any Other Name is a faithful retelling of Romeo and Juliet.
